ORICA-BIKE EXCHANGE is the newest team on the pro cycling World Tour and the first Australian team to reach the most prestigious rank of cycling.
The team was created by long-time backer of Australian cycling, Gerry Ryan and is run by Shayne Bannan who was the CA AIS High Performance Director for more than two decades. The team has a distinctly Aussie flavour with more than half the riders and staff hailing from Australia.
ORICA-BIKE EXCHANGE had an impressive debut season in 2012 winning 32 races, including Simon Gerrans at the Milan-San Remo, a Giro d’Italia stage victory by Matt Goss and the Vuelta a Espana mountains classification with Simon Clarke. Success has continued this year with two stage wins at the Tour de France and four days in yellow serving as the most significant results.
The women’s program, ORICA-AIS, is a joint venture with Cycling Australia and had an equally successful debut season. The team had more than 20 victories last year including overall wins at Tour of Qatar, Tour of Chongming Island, Emakumeen Euskal Bira, Giro del Trentino and Thüringen Rundfahrt as well as an exciting victory at the Tour of Flanders. The team’s winning ways have continued this year with repeat overall victories and stage wins in China, the Basque Country and Germany as well as single day race wins at Omloop Het Nieuwsblad, Cholet – Pays de Loire and Gooik-Geraardsbergn-Gooik.
