For the state’s youngest racers, road season officially begins this weekend at the Goulburn Workers Junior 2 Day Tour.
After a year off due to COVID, Goulburn Cycle Club has rallied to host its biggest annual junior road event, which is now in its 16th edition.
This year’s tour has attracted an impressive field of 141 juniors – predominantly from NSW (106) and the ACT (21), along with competitors from clubs as far-flung as Townsville, Adelaide and Bendigo.
Boys and girls from Under-9s to Under-17s will race four stages, each of which counts towards a general classification.
The Tour will take place wholly on Cullerin Road, west of Goulburn. Saturday’s events start and finish near Gunning, with a short prologue followed by road race. On Sunday, the racing will move to the Breadalbane end of the course for a longer time trial and a closing road race.
“After not being able to stage last year’s tour, we are excited to be presenting our 16th tour and thank you for your support as we resurrect this great sport,” said race director Graeme Northey. “We are proud of our tour and the reputation it has established as providing an event that provides an opportunity for all junior cyclists to compete, but more importantly, have fun in a good, safe environment.”
To add another layer of interest, Saturday’s road race and Sunday’s time trial will be selection events for NSW’s under-15s and under-17s seeking a spot for the 2021 national championships.
Goulburn Cycle Club is running the tour with the support of the Goulburn Workers, Goulburn Mulwaree Council and Acciona Gunning Wind Farm.
The Goulburn Workers Junior 2 Day Tour is the first in a season of state open junior races, along with tours in Port Macquarie, Sydney and the Hunter District, plus the state championships in August.
