Darwin local gets women riding again!

26Jul2017

Darwin local Emma Host is the newest leader to the national behaviour change program She Rides.

An avid rider and a keen supporter of women’s cycling locally, Emma is looking forward to getting more women riding in her community.

“I am passionate about helping other local cyclists to connect in an effort to broaden their riding circles and venture out of their comfort zones be it riding longer distances, dabbling in a different type of riding or just sharing a coffee with someone new,” said Host.

“As an active member of the Darwin cycling community, I believe that every ride should end with good coffee and great company.” She continued.

Having only ridden a bike for the first time since her childhood in 2014, she is innately aware of what it feels like to be a beginner and how important it is to have confidence on the bike in order to progress as a rider, making her a great, supportive match to the She Rides program today.

Emma now cycles regularly enjoying commuting and leisurely path rides just as much as road cycling, hitting the dirt on her mountain bike and taking part in the occasional race or competition. When she isn't travelling interstate or overseas to take part in cycling events, Emma is making the most of life in the Top End.

With the addition of a Darwin program, Cycling Australia is excited to announce that for the first time ever, She Rides is now offered in every State and Territory across Australia.

“Running a She Rides program in every region of the country is not only a massive step forward for our leading behaviour change program but is also symbolic of the grassroots support we’ve received from our network of 230 clubs around the country.” said Cycling Australia CEO Nicholas Green OAM.

“We’re committed to getting more Aussie women on bikes and recognise that our clubs are instrumental in making this happen,” he continued.

Program Description

Welcome to She Rides Darwin where you can look forward to gaining confidence on the bike in a fun, supportive and friendly environment.  We will teach you how to feel confident on your bike as well as how to maintain it so you can ride it for years to come, and we’ll equip you with the skills you need to change a flat tyre and even how to transport your bike.  The best part is that we’ll do it all in some of Darwin’s most picturesque locations including East Point, the Nightcliff foreshore and the Darwin Waterfront as well as some sneaky spots you probably never new existed.  There will be time for learning, riding and good coffee as well as plenty of tips for riding through all seasons in Darwin including the best ways to stay hydrated and what to consider when riding in the rain.

* All bikes welcome.
