Are you ready to see the back of 2020? Are you ready to set some big racing goals for 2021? Well, the time to start planning has now arrived!
Cycling Queensland and Clubs have been working hard behind the scenes to put together the 2021 Road and Track Racing Calendar. Following a tumultuous 2020 which saw multiple calendar re-runs due to COVID-19, here is Cycling Queensland’s first (and hopefully last) 2021 Calendar.
The 2021 Cycling Queensland Calendar Overview:
2021 will see an incredible 86 days of racing across 44 events throughout Queensland for Road and Track.
Amongst the 44 Road and Track events throughout Queensland sit 8 Nationally, and 1 UCI Internationally recognised events, continuing Queensland’s reputation as the best location to run a cycling event in the world (yes, we are biased).
The 8 National Events on the Cycling Queensland Calendar include:
The 1 UCI International Event on the Cycling Queensland Calendar:
In 2021, Queensland riders will see the return of the Queensland Classic Road Series (QCRS) following two years of great success.
The QCRS will see the original five rounds return, with the Metropolitan Championships, Charles Coin, Tyalgum Cup, Darren Smith Classic, and the Cunningham Classic making the 2021 series.
The Queensland Individual Time Trial Series (QLD ITT Series) returns in 2021 for the fourth consecutive year, with one round being hosted outside South East Queensland for the first time ever. Following incredible achievements in 2020 despite COVID-19, the series success was found in running the rounds on consecutive weeks was well received by riders. Taking on this feedback in 2021 rounds will run weekly for the duration of the series.
In contrast to the QLD ITT Series, the Queensland Road Team Series (QRTS) was unable to proceed in 2020 due to COVID-19 though features in the 2021 Calendar. Feedback from teams and riders have resulted in the events spaced out to allow time to prepare for each round, and to provide a solid lead into the State Road Championships. The fourth round of the QRTS will see the Queensland Awards Ceremony joining in on the festivities.
Junior riders will find consistent racing opportunities in the 2021 Queensland Road and Track Calendar. With two weeks separating events starting with the Gold Coast Junior Tour. The June/July School Holiday’s is a Winter of Junior Cycling featuring the Balmoral Junior and Women’s Tour featuring in the first week and the Junior State Road Championships in Bundaberg in the last week of holidays.
The Townsville Cup on Wheels is back on the 2021 Calendar, with the Townsville Cycling Club hoping to debut their new velodrome and surrounding facilities.
Cycling Queensland wishes to thank all Clubs and Members for getting behind some awesome events in 2020, and looks forward to a bigger and better 2021.
