Junior Riders Shift Goals With Cancellation of the 2020 Junior Road National Championships

Cycling Queensland shares the disappointment of the Queensland Junior State Road Team in the decision to cancel the 2020 Cycling Australia Junior Road National Championships in Wagga Wagga in November.

Cycling Australia understands that the decision will be extremely disappointing for athletes, coaches and riders, and the decision to cancel was not taken lightly.

Cycling Queensland CEO Sean Muir acknowledges riders hard work and dedication leading up to the event.

“All riders who were selected to represent Queensland and race at the Australian Junior Road National Championships should be proud of their efforts in being selected to represent Queensland. It is a great achievement to be selected to represent your state, and it is so unfortunate that the environment in 2020 has not permitted racing to go ahead” said Muir.

Cycling Queensland 2020 Junior Head Road Coach Brad Reardon expressed his disappointment in the cancellation of the National Championships.

“Nick Hewes and myself are somewhat disappointed particularly for the athletes, the National Championships is traditionally a major goal for our Junior riders. Credit must be given to the athletes and their parents, for their support and commitment in sessions leading into the cancellation announcement.”

Brad Reardon goes on to commend the Queensland Junior Road Team in their preparations.

“All of the coaching staff had great confidence in the athletes in standing upon the podium in Wagga Wagga come November. And look forward to seeing what they will achieve in the future.”

The cancellation of the 2020 Australian Junior Road National Championship is a continuation of what has been a very unusual year. Cycling Queensland encourages all junior riders to refocus goals by looking at the remaining events on the calendar– like the KOM Financial Advice Queensland Classic Road Series Darren Smith Classic, the third round of the Queensland Track Series, the Racing to break the cycle of domestic violence, or the Queensland Junior Road State Championships to be hosted in Bundaberg from 9 – 11 July 2021.
