Norwood Cycling Club’s Tuesday Night Summer Criteriums have become a core part of the road cycling community here in Adelaide, with weekly Spring and Summer racing regularly seeing roughly 200 participants across 5 mixed grades. Cycling SA and Norwood CC have teamed up to bring another regular crit fixture to the Spring/Summer Racing season, with fortnightly Thursday Night Criteriums for Women and Juniors!
Three Women’s grades (A, B and C) will be offered alongside four Junior grades (A, B, C and D) at these Thursday night races, which will mirror the Tuesday night races schedule: Juniors will race at 6pm in one block and all three Women’s grades will start at approximately 6:40 (at least at the beginning of the season). Women who would like to continue to race on Tuesday nights are welcome to, as the Tuesday Mixed grade racing remains unchanged for the Spring/Summer 2020 season.
This is the first time that Juniors and Women have had regular race programming on a weeknight, with previous separate racing opportunities before this restricted to TDU-season races and weekend criteriums through Winter, mostly.
CSA CEO Lachie Ambrose says “We’ve worked hard over the past three years to address some of the systemic inequalities that have existed in the sport, and we feel that in many areas we’ve made huge progress; the Super Series is a good example of this. However, at some of the more regular club races we’re not always seeing the same level of progress. At too many of these events there is still an acceptance of mixed racing as an acceptable status quo and although this works for many of our female members, for others mixed racing represents a significant barrier to entry. We commend NCC on their commitment to keep progressing the sport and working to break down this barrier.”
CSA Women's Commission member and long-time bike racer Jenny Macpherson had this to say of the racing: "It's fantastic to see NCC and CSA is providing women and juniors an opportunity to race in their own separate grade on a regular basis over summer. There's been a lot of behind the scenes work by CSA, NCC and the Women’s Commission to help develop equal opportunities in cycling and this initiative is sure to provide a great pathway to encouraging new riders into the sport, plus allow current women and juniors to further develop their race craft."
With an added night of racing per fortnight, there’s a need for some additional hands to step up and volunteer! In order for these races to be a success and run smoothly, it will be important that some of those who race on Tuesdays make themselves available to marshal, set up or run Sign On on a Thursday night, and vice versa. If you’re available on one of these nights (doesn’t have to be every week!) please get in touch with Norwood CC or Cycling SA and make yourself known. Volunteers will be eligible for a free race entry, so especially good if you’re racing on a budget!
